The Fabian events programme hosts some of the most prominent public events in British politics. We hold major conferences, lectures and public debates and small invitation only expert policy seminars, including our prestigious Fabian Policy Networks working with a wide range of partner organisations. "Ideological confidence is the way out of this week's political setback" says Purnell

Secretary of State for Work and Pensions James Purnell outlined the government's fightback strategy following the local elections in a speech to the Fabian Society, declaring "ideological confidence is the way out of this week's political setback."

Purnell strongly backed Gordon Brown as the man best equipped to lead the country through choppy economic waters and whose "political career has been defined by consistent argument and action on child poverty"

He also announced a scheme to give interest-free loans to struggling families, saying "I would like nothing more than to put the loan shark out of business."

Denham looks for southern comfort

Following the major Conservative gains in the local elections, and the fall of Southampton council to the Conservatives, Cabinet minister John Denham emphasized the need to understand the issues that matter in the south of England in a Fabian lecture.

Blumenthal discusses post-Bush world

"Government can't cut inheritance tax and end child poverty," says Barnardo's chief

The government's autumn climb-down on inheritance tax has fatally weakened Labour's mission to end child poverty, it was claimed by Barnardo's Chief Executive Martin Narey at the launch of the Fabian's new pamphlet How To Defend Inheritance Tax.

Marmot: says "government action can narrow health inequalities gap"

Internationally renowned academic Sir Michael Marmot identified priorities for the government in narrowing the health inequalites gap in Britain at the final seminar of the Fabian Health Inequalities Forum.
