Gordon Brown put education, trust in democracy and winning hearts and
minds in foreign policy at the top of his next decade agenda as the
Fabian New Year Conference kicked off the political year on Saturday
13th January 2007. Over 50 top speakers and 750 participants debated
what needs to change on equality, education, the environment, democracy
and foreign policy. Read full reports from the conference sessions.
The Chancellor's public conversation with Oona King offered some
important clues as to Brown's priorities as premier if, as widely
expected, he succeeds Tony Blair later in the year.
There were heated debates over the lessons of the Iraq war for
British foreign policy. Glenys Kinnock, James Purnell and Yvette Cooper
highlighted the importance of legitimacy in international affairs.
Hilary Benn defended his support for the overthrow of Saddam but argued
Labour needed the 'humility' to learn the lessons of post-war failures.
