Fabian Fringe Events and Labour Party Spring Conference PDF Print E-mail

The Fabian Society held two fringe events at Labour Party Spring Conference in Birmingham, on Saturday 1st March 2008. The venue was Bryne-Jones Room, Novotel Birmingham Centre, 70 Broad Street, Birmingham (outside the secure zone)

The Fringe event focused on NHS reforms and the challange for Labour of tackling child poverty. Speaking at the event Work and Pensions Secretary James Purnell said that the target for ending child poverty by 2010 was "non-negotiable".

Below is a brief outline of the agenda forthe day:

12.30 – 14.00: NHS at 60 – how do we create a healthy nation?
Given the 60th Anniversary of the NHS in 2008, this event will discuss the public politics around improving the nation's health.

18.00 – 19:30: Child Poverty Challenge: is this how Labour begins the fight back?
This event will discuss how the Labour Party can galvanise support around the challenge of ending child poverty to begin its political fight back and rebuild the progressive coalition.

Speakers: James Purnell MP, Kate Green (Child Poverty Action Group), Stella Creasy (Involve, and PPC for Walthamstow), Louise Bamfield (Fabian Society)
