Government policy on age is 'pretty rubbish', says third way guru.
Scrapping the statutory retirement age entirely should be part of a deep rethink of a 'pretty rubbish' government's policy on age, leading academic Anthony Giddens told the Fabian fringe.
Age doesn't have a strong legislative framework', said Giddens, contrasting with approaches to disability, race and gender discrimination,'Overall, the government's policy on age is pretty rubbish' he said.
'The government talks about pensions and pensioners. We shouldn't talk about pensioners at all – it is incapacitating. We should be making the case for older people to work for as long as they want to. There should be no enforced retirement age at all', said Giddens.
Giddens also said the new CEHR needed to do better in its analysis of inequalities than the bodies it was succeeding. The legacy documents of the outgoing Commissions had produced 'rambling documents' with a 'pot pourri' of analysis.
