The Fabian City, Business and Politics Network was launched in 2004 by Ed Balls, seeking to bring together decision-makers and opinion formers from business, politics and civil society to discuss progressive responses to major economic issues.
The Network will holds five seminars a year, with high-level speakers from the political and policy world, and one annual dinner. Each seminar will focus on different aspects of the policy agenda. Government ministers, advisers, civil servants, backbench MPs, academics and other commentators are invited to attend individual events as appropriate.
Programme 2008:
13 May – International Trade
Gareth Thomas MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Trade Policy
This seminar looked at trade and climate change, international corporate practice, protectionism, and explored the politics and policy surrounding the Doha round of international trade negotiations.
22 July – Business Competitiveness and Productivity
Baroness Shriti Vadera, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Business and Competitiveness
Business and the tax system – with Jane Kennedy MP - tbc
The network will hold another two seminars in 2008, the subjects of which will be finalised in the coming months. At the moment the following are proposed for further discussion:
- Financial literacy and capability
- Public service reform
We will also hold a private dinner for network members in the House of Commons with a guest speaker. Members of the City, Business and Politics Network will also be invited to events held within the Fabian Environmental Policy Network, and the Fabian Housing and Community Policy Network. The programmes for these networks are available on request.
