The Fabian Science and Technology Network was launched in 2006 by Lord Sainsbury, who was then Science Minister. The opening event discussed his Fabian paper, Science and Innovation Policy in a Global Economy, which reflected on the changes in science policy since 1997 and the next decade challenges facing government. (This was also a theme on which Sainsbury had written for the Fabian Society in 1982).

The 2007 programme opened with a discussion of UK science and innovation policy with Science Minister Malcolm Wicks. Further themes to be explored include skills policy, the policy challenges involved in science and innovation driving productivity growth, and other key policy issues.
