The Fabian Society is seeking a senior media specialist to work for us 1 or 2 days a week – either as an employee or a freelance consultant.

We want to appoint an experienced and entrepreneurial media relations professional with an excellent track-record of securing press coverage in think tanks, politics or similar. We’re advertising because our current post holder has been appointed to a senior media position in the office of the leader of the opposition.

The Fabian Society is a left-wing think tank and membership organisation affiliated to the Labour party. Our employees and consultants share the aims and values of the society. With over a dozen senior Fabian members in the shadow cabinet we’ve never had more influence at the heart of politics and we want our media profile to grow to match.

In this position you’ll promote dozens of events, publications and research projects each year including high profile policy commissions. You will also support our expert team to generate stories and comment on a wide range of public policy and political debates.

We’re looking for someone who wants 2-way flexibility. You can work from wherever you want, and usually at the times you choose. But you’ll need to be able to vary your hours week-by-week in response to your workload and to liaise with journalists at evenings and weekends if required. We will work with you to make the position fit around your existing professional and family commitments.

We’re open to appointing either an employee or a freelance consultant.

  • Freelance consultant: terms are by negotiation. Remuneration will depend on skills and experience.
  • Permanent employee: the salary is in a range from £31,000 to £37,000 (pro rata, 1 to 2 days per week) plus an employer pension contribution of between 5 and 7 percent and 30 days per year holiday (pro rata). More may be available for an exceptional candidate.

The Fabian Society aspires to be an equal, inclusive and welcoming workplace for colleagues from all backgrounds. We strongly encourage applications from people under-represented in politics and at the Fabian Society, including disabled people and people from LGBT, low-income and ethnic minority backgrounds.
