The Fabian Society is delighted to launch our latest report, Building Skills: Tackling the Built Environment Skills Crisis.
The construction and built environment sector is crucial to the UK economy. It provides millions of jobs and plays a critical role in enabling the wider economy, delivering and maintaining homes, buildings and infrastructure we all need and rely on. However, the sector is facing a severe skills crisis, with nearly 40,000 jobs currently unfilled due to a shortage of skilled workers.
The government has made some welcome progress in tackling the crisis, including through the construction skills package announced last year. But – as we set out in the report – given the scale of the crisis, we need to see further action if we are to ensure we have the skilled workforce required to build the homes and infrastructure we need.
We would like to thank the Association of Colleges, Electrical Contractors Association (ECA), JTL, and NHBC for their support in this project. In particular, a special thanks to the Joint Industry Board (JIB) for their support in delivering this event.
This launch event will bring together parliamentarians, industry leaders and skills providers to explore the nature of the construction skills crisis and how we can tackle it.
