Fabian Housing Centre

The Fabian Housing Centre is a major research and policy programme to help shape the implementation of the government’s housing strategy and the broader housing debate across the UK.

We are developing practical but ambitious ideas to build 1.5m homes, tackle the housing crisis, and create great places to live.

To do so, the Centre is working in collaboration with key housing stakeholders, policymakers and those affected by the housing crisis.

We are currently working on several projects:

• Affordable homeownership – identifying measures to address affordability for first time buyers, with a particular focus on those from lower incomes. A project with the Hill Group
• Renters’ rights – developing further policies to support tenants in the private rented sector. A project with Joseph Rowntree Foundation
• Experiences of private renting – understanding the experiences of tenants and landlords in the private rented sector across coastal and rural areas. A project with the TDS Foundation.
• Improving S106 and CIL – setting how the government can improve Section 106 and the Community Infrastructure Levy to deliver great places to live and more homes.  A project with Hallam and Shoosmiths

We have published:

• Breaking Ground which set out the scale of the challenge facing the government to build 1.5m new homes, and how number of homes started will have to increase rapidly to reach levels never before seen in England.
• Forward Planning which recommended policies to ensure older people can remain independent in their own home as they age. A project with the Centre for Ageing Better
• Beyond Numbers which featured a range of contributors weighing in on how to deliver high quality homes and transform communities for the better.
• Housing the Future which set out measures for the next Scottish government to build more homes and tackle the housing emergency.
• Quick Wins which set out quick or no cost wins that could increase housebuilding, improve the housing market, and deliver better quality homes. A project with Land, Planning and Development Federation.
• On the Ladder which recommended measures to help first-time buyers without generational wealth onto the property ladder, and improve consumer outcomes. A project in partnership with the New Homes Quality Board.

We want to hear about transformative, progressive ideas for tackling the housing crisis, and work with partners to develop new thinking on housing.
