Reacting to today’s Spring Statement Fabian Society General Secretary Joe Dromey said:
“Labour has had a challenging first year in government. They inherited public services on their knees, precarious public finances, and a stagnant economy.
“There is much to welcome in the spending review. From a huge boost for regional transport to a generational increase in social housing; from the extension of free school meals to record funding for our NHS. This is an investment in national renewal.
“Far from a return to austerity, day to day spending will increase by £190bn over the period, and we will see a huge boost in capital investment. However, the settlement for some departments is very tight. The Chancellor may well have to raise more revenue at the Autumn Budget to ease the pressures on public services.
“In the coming months and years, the government will need to bring these measures together to tell a wider story about how Labour is improving lives. If they can show that our economy is growing again, that people’s living standards are improving, and that public services are back on a firm footing they will be rewarded by the voters.”
