After a significant decline in the 2000s, the number of pensioners in poverty has increased since 2010. Despite recent increases to the state pension, two million older people in the UK are now living in poverty. This rise is in large part driven by the number of people retiring without sufficient private pension savings.
This is a crucial time for pensions policy. The Pensions Commission is exploring the current system, and it will set out recommendations in early 2027. The Fabian Society will be releasing a major report into the future of the pensions system in summer 2026, seeking to inform the work of the Pensions Commission, and set out how we can ensure security and dignity for all in later life.
This panel will explore the challenges facing the pensions system, what reforms are needed to improve retirement security, and how we can build a fairer approach that works for future generations.
