Andrew Harrop, general secretary

Andrew has been general secretary of the Fabian Society since Autumn 2011 and in that time has led the society’s research on economic and social policy as well as the future of the British left. In 2022-23 he led a project reporting to the Labour party on the roadmap to a National Care Service. He was previously director of policy and public affairs for Age UK and before that was head of policy at Age Concern England, and a researcher for the New Policy Institute and a backbench Labour MP.

Arts and creative industries policy unit

Alison Cole, arts and creative industries policy unit director

Alison Cole was most recently Editor of The Art Newspaper, the journal of record of the international art world, and hsa worked as an Executive Director for some of the UK’s leading cultural organisations. An established author and journalist, her latest book on Michelangelo was published by the Royal Academy in March 2017.

She is also a Trustee of the Foundling Museum, an Adviser to the Institute of the Imagination, Learning Adviser to Art UK and a member of the Critics Circle.

Nathan Lloyd, senior researcher

Nathan joined the Fabians in December 2023. Prior to joining the Fabians, he was a Political Researcher working closely with Sir Tony Blair as part of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change and co-authored reports across multiple policy areas from the vaccination rollout during the Covid-19 pandemic to Western defence and energy strategy following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Before that, he worked as a researcher for Lord Andrew Adonis and supported in the writing of ‘Ernest Bevin: Labour’s Churchill’, a biography of Clement Attlee’s Foreign Secretary.

As a writer, he has published political commentary in The New European and was trained as a playwright at the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, from which he has maintained a keen interest in policymaking within the arts and cultural sector.

Flora Dodd, researcher

Flora joined the Fabians in January 2024 as a Researcher within the Arts and Creative Industries Policy Unit. Flora studied music at Durham University and has a Master’s degree in Education in Arts and Cultural Settings from King’s College London. After graduating from King’s, Flora worked in the London Symphony Orchestra’s education department, LSO Discovery, running music education projects in east London.

Kate is in her second stint at the Fabian Society, after a break travelling. She first joined the Fabians in September 2016. She was previously a freelance writer and editor, specialising in social policy, and before that edited Inside Housing magazine. She has a degree in modern languages from the University of Cambridge.

Iggy Wood, assistant editor

Iggy joined the Fabian Society in 2022. He studied philosophy, politics and economics at the University of Oxford, where he also served as Investigations Editor for the student paper. After graduating he worked for the NHS, helping to execute the nationwide school-age vaccination programme.

Hannah Kunzlik, membership and digital communications manager

Hannah has a background in non-profit communications, most recently in the youth sector and previously for mental health, substance use, reproductive health, and anti-human trafficking organisations. Before turning to communications, she was Jane Haining Humanitarian Fellow on the Lantos-Humanity in Action Congressional Fellowship, working as a legislative aide for Congressman Mike Honda.

Hannah is also a trustee for the National Eczema Society.

Shehana Udat, membership officer

Shehana joined the Fabian Society in 2018. She holds a Master’s degree in human rights from University College London. Previously she has worked for several human rights organisations including working in parliament with a focus on the Commonwealth. She currently splits her time between working at the Fabians and for an organisation which has a focus on global development and social justice.

Shehana works at the Fabian Society on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Rory O’Brien, partnerships and events manager

Rory joined the Fabian Society in 2022 as part of the events team for the Labour Party Conference before joining the team full time. He graduated from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama with a degree in production management and spent five years working in the theatre industry. Rory is currently studying for his masters in political communication at Birkbeck, University of London.

Rebecca joined the Fabian Society in 2023. She studied Politics at the University of Edinburgh and was the Editor-in-Chief of The Rattlecap newspaper. During her last year of university, Rebecca also worked for a frontbench Labour MP.

Luke Raikes, research director and deputy general secretary

Luke joined the Fabian Society in March 2020. Before joining the Fabians, he led IPPR North’s research on the regional economies and devolution, and he has also published work on skills, employment support, industrial strategy and transport. Prior to this he worked at the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. Luke was also a Labour councillor on Manchester City Council from 2012-2023.

Areas of expertise: regional economies and inequalities, devolution, productivity, the economy, industrial strategy, employment rights, employment support, transport and political strategy.

Ben Cooper, research manager

Ben joined the Fabian Society in 2018. Since joining the Fabians, Ben has led research on older, rural and costal voters, early years, education, housing, and culture funding. In 2022, Ben was selected by MHP Group as one of the ’30 to Watch Politics’ award for under-30s.

Ben is also a trustee for a charity supporting people with complex disabilities and is chair of the Co-op Party’s (dis)Ability Network. He previously worked for a Labour MP.

Areas of expertise: election strategy, housing, rural and coastal policy, education, early years, culture, and disability policy.

Sasjkia Otto, senior researcher

Sasjkia joined the Fabian Society in 2022 from the civil service, where she led policies to tackle digital divides and tech platform power, working across Whitehall and internationally. Before joining the civil service, she advised blue chip companies on topics including the economy, labour markets, consumer affairs, climate change, health and equalities. She is the founder of a democracy-building nonprofit and served as trustee for a charity tackling poverty and isolation.

Areas of expertise: labour markets, skills, poverty in later years, digital, data and technology, infrastructure, competition.

Eloise Sacares, researcher

Eloise joined the Fabians in December 2021 as Events and Digital Assistant, before moving to the research team. Eloise graduated in 2021 from the University of Bath with a degree in politics with economics. Alongside her degree she volunteered for Bath’s student union and worked as online deputy editor for Bath Time Magazine. She joined the Fabian Society in December 2021.

Katherine Sangster, national director

Katherine has experience in finance, marketing and project management both in the corporate and charitable sectors. Katherine also works as a policy advisor to an MP and MSP, having previously spent three years as Head of Office for an MP .

She has also campaigned for fairer access to childcare, lobbying the Scottish Government on behalf of working parents and is a graduate of the Jo Cox Women in Leadership programme.
