After the 2008 crash, many experts thought that the resulting recession would be merely a bump in the road: painful, yes, but ultimately a temporary slump with well-understood causes, after which normal service would resume.
Nearly 20 years on, it is clear that they were spectacularly wrong. In this collection, a group of authors from across a vast swathe of the left and centre put forward their proposals to set Britain back on track. Featuring a foreword from the growth minister, Dan Tomlinson, the essays consider the different shapes our economy could take and set out policy agendas spanning tax reform, transport, trade and more.
